>> Call for proposals "Contested and Divided Memory in 21st Century Europe" (deadline: 22 January 2021)
The Institute of European Studies at UC Berkeley will host the IES Graduate Student Conference "Dissonant Echoes of History: Contested and Divided Memory in 21st Century Europe" which will take place virtually on Thursday, March 11, 2021. Perhaps not even hindsight would have prepared the world for the monumental events of 2020. From the global pandemic to a global call for racial equity and justice following the killing of George Floyd, 2020 has brought into focus the potentials and hurdles for the international mobility of memory. For example, how can we account for the US reexamination of Christopher Colombus, but his unproblematic celebration in Italy? Or the irony of mandatory face coverings in much of Europe, when not too long ago debates raged in France about the challenge of the hijab to French national identity? 2020’s unique lens has thus brought new scrutiny to the legacies of colonialism and the fostering of national identity across Europe, triggered by an American phenomenon. How has 2020, with its complex mix of uncertainty and hope, tragedy and transformation, contributed to new perspectives on old traumas? What are the effects of memories entering or exiting Europe, and how do these travelling memories inform our understanding of the past?
The Institute of European Studies at UC Berkeley invites proposals for a one-day graduate conference that aims to bring together students working on issues related to memory in or of Europe at any scale, from local to intercontinental. The conference will be multidisciplinary and welcomes submissions from students in the humanities, social sciences, law, public policy, and creative disciplines. We are interested in bringing together scholars approaching memory studies from diverse disciplinary perspectives and employing a variety of methodologies. One of the goals of this conference is to create a space for graduate students and professors who work on European Memory Studies to interact with and learn from each other. As a graduate conference, students are expected to present a synopsis of their research, which can be a work in progress. This year’s conference and reception will be fully digital, hosted on Zoom.

>> CALAS-IEAT Chair in Brazil (deadline: 31 January 2021)
The annual call for the CALAS-IEAT Guest Chair Program, offered by the Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences (CALAS) in conjunction with the Institute for Advanced Transdisciplinary Studies (IEAT) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), is open. The position comprises a three-month research stay at the IEAT starting in September 2021. According to the research program of CALAS. The call convenes specialists on Latin America interested in addressing experiences of crisis in the region, exploring different problems of the pasta and present and the prospects for solving such conflicts, promoting transdisciplinary research on crisis, processes of social change, and the role of different actors involved. For the 2021 call, the research project to be carried out has to be related to the issue of social inequalities.

Está abierta la convocatoria anual para el Programa de Cátedra CALAS-IEAT, ofertada por el Centro Maria Sibylla Merian de Estudios Latinoamericanos Avanzados en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales (CALAS) en conjunto con el Instituto de Estudios Avanzados Transdisciplinarios (IEAT) de la Universidad Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). La cátedra comprende una estadía de investigación de tres meses en el IEAT a partir de septiembre 2021. De acuerdo con el programa de investigación del CALAS. La cátedra convoca a especialistas sobre América Latina interesados en abordar experiencias de crisis en la región, explorando diferentes problemas del presente y las perspectivas de solución de dichos conflictos, promoviendo la investigación transdisciplinar sobre la crisis, los procesos de cambio social que la acompañan y el rol de los diferentes actores involucrados. Para la convocatoria 2021, el proyecto de investigación a realizar debe estar relacionado con el tema de las desigualdades sociales.

Está aberta a chamada, a ser realizada anualmente, para o Programa de Cátedras CALAS-IEAT, promovido pelo Centro Maria Sibylla Merian de Estudos Latino-americanos Avançados (CALAS) e pelo Instituto de Estudos Avançados Transdisciplinares (IEAT) da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). O programa é administrado pelo IEAT e patrocinado pelo CALAS. A Cátedra abarca uma estadia de três meses do pesquisador no IEAT. Compared to other world regions, Latin America is characterized by high levels of social inequality. While academic efforts in recent years have increasingly focused on the consequences of this constellation for the marginalized and the poor, the constitution and concentration of wealth in the hands of small economic elites remain largely unexplored. To cope with this lacuna, the Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences (CALAS) aims to comprehensively examine wealth and economic elites in Latin America. Therefore, we invite researchers to contribute to this project with new ideas, fresh perspectives as well as extraordinary, experimental and innovative approaches.

América Latina se caracteriza por una desigualdad social históricamente persistente, que resulta muy elevada en comparación con otras regiones del mundo. Si bien en los últimos años los esfuerzos científicos se han centrado cada vez más en las consecuencias de este panorama para las poblaciones marginadas y pobres, la constitución y concentración de la riqueza en manos de una élite económica pequeña sigue estando muy poco explorada. Por lo tanto, con la línea de investigación "Estudio de la riqueza y de las elites", el Centro Maria Sibylla Merian de Estudios Latinoamericanos Avanzados en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales (CALAS) se propone examinar exhaustivamente la riqueza y las elites económicas de América Latina, complementando las investigaciones existentes. Por ello, invitamos a investigadores e investigadoras a contribuir a esta línea de trabajo con nuevas ideas, perspectivas, propuestas extraordinarias y enfoques experimentales e innovadores.

El propósito de la plataforma para el diálogo "Aprender de y durante la pandemia: Superar la brecha educativa en América Latina" es promover el intercambio de análisis que se está realizando sobre el impacto de la pandemia en los sistemas educativos en el mundo, con énfasis especial en la situación de América Latina y El Caribe. Esto debe de servir para discutir propuestas creativas, como a partir de las iniciativas generadas durante la contingencia sanitaria, se podrán remediar las carencias educativas estructurales, mitigar las disparidades, mejorar el nivel de la enseñanza en la región, y fortalecer desde las escuelas la convivencia democrática, social, solidaria. La convocatoria está dirigida a postulantes de las Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades que puedan aportar a las temáticas expuestas tanto en términos empíricos como teóricos y metodológicos.

The Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation supports cooperation between Austria and the United States through research and teaching projects relating to the U.S. in economics and the social sciences. This may also include projects in other academic areas as long as they address problems of the social- and economic sciences. In this context, the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation invites applications projects of scientific cooperation with the University of California, Berkeley for the academic year 2021/22, coordinated by the Institute of European Studies at UC Berkeley: 2 PhD students at the University of California, Berkeley for a duration of three months and a stipend of $ 6.000 (+ $ 500 Berkeley Visiting Fee). The time frame for the stay at Berkeley can be chosen freely between September 2021 and June 2022.

Heutige transnationale Geschlechterverhältnisse können wir nur verstehen, wenn wir die Bedeutung des Kolonialismus für ihre Entstehung berücksichtigen. Wie dekoloniale Theoretiker*innen rekonstruiert haben, wurden ein als universell ausgegebenes, partikulares westlich-europäisches Verständnis hierarchischer Geschlechterdichotomien weltweit verbreitet und damit auch spezifische Macht- und Herrschaftsbeziehungen verankert. Gleichzeitig haben präkoloniale Wissensordnungen überlebt und tauchen in transformierter Weise immer wieder auf – in den vielfältigen Praktiken, Analysen und Erzählungen indigener, mestizischer, afro-lateinamerikanischer Communities. Die Perspektiven des aktuellen dekolonialen Feminismus in Lateinamerika bereichern eine rassismuskritische Geschlechterforschung enorm.
Die in La Paz/Bolivien lebende Autorin und Aktivistin Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui hat sich zwar der Zuschreibung, eine dekoloniale Theoretikerin zu sein, stets verweigert – und damit ihrer Skepsis gegenüber einer entortenden und entpolitisierenden Akademie Ausdruck verliehen. Sie hat mit ihren Arbeiten zu andinen Gesellschaften, indigenem Widerstand und oraler Kultur allerdings vielschichtige und weitsichtige Analysen vorgelegt, die Anschlüsse für eine dekoloniale feministische Debatten auch hierzulande bieten.
In der Veranstaltung werden Forschende aus der Allgemeinen Soziologie des Instituts für Soziologie (Fachbereich Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften) und Mitglieder des Forschungsnetzwerkes Queer Studies, Decolonial Feminisms and Cultural Transformations (QDFCT) der Justus-Liebig Universität Gießen die deutschsprachige Ausgabe eines Bandes mit zentralen Texten von Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui vorstellen. Und sie werden zudem aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten unter Rückgriff auf Cusicanqui und andere dekoloniale Theoretiker*innen zur Diskussion stellen.Abschließend wird Encarnación Gutiérrez Rodríguez die Dringlichkeit feministischer dekolonialer Analysen für die Soziologie in Deutschland kommentieren.

In einem 2013 von Gabriela Badillo ins Leben gerufenen Kurzfilm-Projekt werden indigene Märchen in ihrer Originalsprache nacherzählt. Das Projektziel ist, alle 68 Sprachgruppen Mexikos zu erfassen. Bislang konnten 36 Kurzfilme produziert werden.
