Camps Conference 2022
January 2022 will mark the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the Guantánamo Bay detention camps, which were used as a U.S. military prison just months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in 2001. Such anniversaries offer opportunities to pause, look back, and imagine the future anew, but what insights will this one foster?
To investigate and critically discuss this matter within an academic setting, the Center for Inter-American Studies (C.IAS) of the University of Graz will hold a conference together with the Department of English at the University of Puerto Rico’s Río Piedras Campus. The conference titled “Camps, (In)justice, and Solidarity in the Americas: Commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the Guantánamo Bay Detention Camps” will be held on January 28–31, 2022, in Graz, Austria.
The conference organizers are hopeful that travel to Graz will be possible in January 2022, but they realize that the situation is complex and somewhat unpredictable. With this in mind, the organizing committee is making plans that will allow some speakers to present remotely and others to present on site. These plans for a hybrid conference will be adjusted in accordance with changes travel advisories and other realities of the COVID-19 pandemic. The organizers hope to finalize these plans in September of 2021, if not sooner.
The conference registration fee will be € 180 (Early Bird). The early bird registration fee will be offered until the beginning of November. Graduate students are elegible to pay a reduced fee of € 70. Both fees include conference materials as well as lunches, dinners, and coffee breaks. Details about how to pay registration and deadlines for doing so will posted on this website at a later date.
