Deconstructing Anti-Muslim Prejudices

Lecture by GUSEGG alumni Arwa Elabd (University of Innsbruck) via uniMEET

The Center for Inter-American Studies (C.IAS) cordially invites you to join us for the lecture "Ms Marvel Substitutes Fears with Facts: Deconstructing Anti-Muslim Prejudices" by GUSEGG alumni Arwa Elabd.

Literature can be applied as a powerful tool in the classroom to deconstruct racial prejudices and to enhance a critical engagement with diversity and narratives. This lecture will use the graphic novel Ms Marvel by G Willow Wilson and Sana Amanat as an example to deconstruct Anti-Muslim prejudices through literature. The character’s behavior will amplify the deconstruction of popular Muslim stereotypes and demonstrates the importance of literary representation. This talk will engage with the importance of literary representation in educational settings and how it can be used as a tool to include diverse narratives in the discourse.

Arwa Elabd is a PhD candidate at the University of Innsbruck working on literary and cultural studies with a focus on diverse narratives and representation of marginalized voices in literature. After having completed her master’s in Spanish and German in the teaching program at the University of Vienna, she has collected experience in various educational settings in Spain, in Austria, and as a Fulbright FLTA at Bowling Green University in Ohio. Besides working on her dissertation, she is also the founder of Bibliobox, a project that highlights black and BIPOC authors.
