The Laura Bassi Scholarship, which awards a total of $8,000 thrice per annum, was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed.

The Department of International Development (ID) at the London School of Economics (LSE) invites submissions to a one-day virtual workshop taking place on the 17th of May 2021 at 4 pm GMT, from academics and activists who engage with the concept of ‘cosmopolitics’ and investigate the bond that ties humans to the landscapes, challenging dualistic understandings of the nature/culture relation. The Webinar in Ibero-American Economic History, jointly organized by economic historians from Universitat de Barcelona, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, El Colegio de México and the Universidad de la República, Uruguay, aims to expand academic contacts and enhance the international dissemination of research on the economic history of Latin America. The webinar meets on Zoom every second Friday at 4:00 pm CET. The new sessions will run from February 26 to June 4, 2021. Each seminar has a maximum duration of one hour, with 40 minutes devoted to speakers’ presentation and the rest of time for questions. Each session has a moderator. Attendees can ask questions in writing in the chat and the moderator will be in charge of filtering and forwarding them to the speaker. We will follow a flexible approach. Speakers will choose the language in which they prefer to present. Questions can be asked in Spanish, Portuguese or English. The language of the presentation will be communicated before each webinar.

Die neue Monographie von Christiane Berth ist soeben erschienen. Darin zeigt die Autorin die Zusammenhänge zwischen Hunger, dem Niedergang der Diktatur des Somoza-Clans und der Sandinistischen Revolution auf.

"Food policy and practices varied widely in Nicaragua during the last decades of the twentieth century. In the 1970s and ‘80s, food scarcity contributed to the demise of the Somoza dictatorship and the Sandinista revolution. Although faced with widespread scarcity and political restrictions, Nicaraguan consumers still carved out spaces for defining their food choices. Despite economic crises, rationing, and war limiting peoples’ food selection, consumers responded with improvisation in daily cooking practices and organizing food exchanges through three distinct periods. First, the Somoza dictatorship (1936–1979) promoted culture and food practices from the United States, which was an option only for a minority of citizens. Second, the 1979 Sandinista revolution tried to steer Nicaraguans away from mass consumption by introducing an austere, frugal consumption that favored local products. Third, the transition to democracy between 1988 and 1993, marked by extreme scarcity and economic crisis, witnessed the re-introduction of market mechanisms, mass advertising, and imported goods. Despite the erosion of food policy during transition, the Nicaraguan revolution contributed to recognizing food security as a basic right and the rise of peasant movements for food sovereignty." Christiane Berth wurde vor rund einem Jahr als Professorin für globale Zeitgeschichte an das Institut für Geschichte der Universität Graz berufen. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind laut dem Eintrag in Wikipedia "die globale Geschichte von Kommunikation und Technik, Ernährung und Konsum, Welthandel, Migration sowie die Geschichte Mexikos und Zentralamerikas". Als Zentrum für Inter-Amerikanische Studien begrüßen wir es, dass die Universität Graz mit der Forschung und Lehre von Christiane Berth einen zusätzlichen Fokus auf Lateinamerika erhalten hat und freuen uns auf eine zukünftige Zusammenarbeit (siehe hierzu etwa die Veranstaltung "Buchpräsentation Diktaturen in Lateinamerika" am 4. Am 18. Februar 2021 ist der Rover „Perseverance (Percy)“ der US-amerikanischen Raumfahrtbehörde NASA gemeinsam mit seinem kleinen "Begleiter", der Hubschrauberdrohne "Ingenuity", auf dem Mars gelandet - seit dem 23. Februar gibt es hierzu auch die ersten Videos. Die beiden waren am 30. Juli 2020 von der Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida aus gestartet. Auf Percy`s Mast befindet sich das rund 4 Kilogramm schwere Mast-Mounted Camera System (kurz Mastcam-Z) mit Zoom-Funktion, um unter anderem hochaufgelöste Videos sowie Panorama-Farbaufnahmen (360°) und 3D-Aufnahmen von der Marsoberfläche anzufertigen. Die Kamera wurde von Forschern der Arizona State University (übrigens ihrerseits ein Kooperationspartner des Zentrums für Inter-Amerikanische Studien) angefertigt und von Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego (Kalifornien) hergestellt. Die 3D-Rekonstruktionen obliegen der Forschungsgesellschaft Joanneum Research in Graz sowie dem Forschungszentrum für Virtual Reality und Visualisierung in Wien. In einem Interview auf Joanneum Research erklärt Gerhard Paar von der Forschungsgruppe Bildanalyse und Messsysteme von DIGITAL - Institut für Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien der Forschungsgesellschaft Joanneum Research in Graz:
„Einige Wochen nach der Landung ist geplant, unsere Auswertungssoftware direkt vor Ort beim Wissenschaftsteam der Arizona State University zu installieren, sodass Verzögerungen durch die Datenübermittlung minimiert werden. Vorab-Daten werden aller Voraussicht nach der Öffentlichkeit zeitnah zur Verfügung gestellt. Rohdaten und sogenannte ‚kalibrierte Daten‘, die die Eigenheiten des Kamerainstruments rechnerisch in objektive Messdaten verpacken, werden typischerweise nach einigen Monaten für die akademische Verwertung öffentlich zugänglich gemacht. (...) Ziel ist es, für die weitere Forschung dreidimensionale Karten, in denen die Daten der Oberflächeninstrumente lokalisiert und in ihrem Zusammenspiel interpretiert werden können, zu erstellen.“
In einem gänzlich anderen Zusammenhang wurden am 20. Februar 2021 Legierungsproben vom Department Metallurgie der Montanuniversität Leoben mit einem unbemannten Raumtransporter zur International Space Station ISS geschickt. Die derzeit einzige Raumstation und zugleich größter Satellit im All war ursprünglich als militärische Einrichtung von den USA geplant worden und wird seit 1998 von den 5 Raumfahrtagenturen NASA (USA), Roskosmos (Russland), ESA (Europäische Raumfahrtagentur - seit 1987 ist Österreich Mitglied, Kanada ist als einziger amerikanischer Staat ein assoziiertes Mitglied), CSA (Kanada) und JAXA (Japan) sowie 16 Staaten betrieben. Brasilien hat mit den USA ein separates Nutzungsabkommen. Innerhalb des internationalen Forschungsprojekts METCOMP („Metastable Solidification of Composites: Novel Peritectic Structures and In-situ Composites”) starteten am 22. Februar die ersten Versuche mit diesen Proben, die seit 2018 von Johann Mogeritsch und Andreas Ludwig (beide Montanuniversität Leoben) im Rahmen des Teilprojekts METTRANS (METastable Solidification of Novel Peritectic Structures – Studies with TRANSparent Model Alloys: ISS SPACE) entwickelt wurden. Hierzu informieren die Seiten der Montanuniversität Leoben:
"Durch die Verwendung neuartiger, durchsichtiger Modellsubstanzen können erstmals detaillierte Einblicke in Prozesse, die beim Erstarren von Metallen stattfinden und so zu bestimmten Mikrostrukturen führen, gewonnen werden – und das ohne den störenden Einfluss der Schwerkraft. Ziel ist dabei, durch die geänderten Umgebungsbedingungen ein noch besseres Verständnis für diese Vorgänge zu erhalten.
Mikrostrukturen zeigen, wie genau ein Metall aufgebaut ist, und bestimmen maßgeblich die Eigenschaften des Materials und des späteren Bauteils. Ein besseres Verständnis kann so in vielen Bereichen zu Vorteilen führen: Produkte wie Autos und Flugzeuge können gezielt robuster, sicherer und leichter designt werden und so einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Nachhaltigkeit leisten."
