Call for Papers - Visions of the Future

Visions of the Future. Imaginations of Heterogeneous Societies and Their Social Cohesion

March 17–19, 2027
University of Graz

Interdisciplinary Conference of the Research Network “Heterogeneity and Cohesion”

The conference will focus on visions of the future that address the development of social diversity (for instance with regard to intersections of gender, sexual orientation, language, migration experience, religion, social class, age, and (dis)ability) and social cohesion. These visions will be critically examined, with particular attention to the normative understandings of cohesion and diversity they embody. At the same time, this thematic area can serve as a basis for discussing and exploring general social-theoretical and methodological aspects related to imaginations of the future …

Celebration of Hermine Penz's Retirement

To mark Hermine Penz's retirement, we would like to honor her with a celebratory event. It would be a great pleasure for us to celebrate this special occasion together with Hermine's colleagues, friends, and companions, and we therefore extend a warm invitation to you!

The event will focus on Hermine's long-standing academic work, particularly her significant contribution to establishing ecolinguistics, a field she significantly shaped in Graz together with the recently deceased Alwin Fill. To honor her pivotal role in ecolinguistics, three guests from the International Ecolinguistics Association will give short presentations. Furthermore, Hermine's achievements in teaching and university engagement will be recognized, including her many years as a professor of linguistics and her work as chair of curriculum committees at the Faculty of Humanities. Her roles at the European level, such as chair of the European Centre for Modern Languages ​​in Austria, as well as her involvement in numerous Erasmus+ projects, will also be highlighted during the ceremony, underscoring her lasting influence on applied linguistics.

Celebration of Roberta Maierhofer's Retirement

To mark Roberta Maierhofer's retirement, the Center for Inter-American Studies at the Graz School of Interdisciplinary Transnational Studies, together with the CEEPUS Network Inter-American Studies, will host a ceremony in Meerscheinschlössl on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.

This celebration will focus on Roberta's long-standing research in American and Inter-American Studies, where she has, like few others, created networks, communities, and connections across borders. Her work as Vice-Rector of the University of Graz, as Director of the Graz International Summer School Seggau, as well as her various roles in numerous committees and associations (Fulbright Austria, Kultus Gemeinde, AAI, etc.), will also be honored to highlight her expertise in internationalization, institutionalization, and interculturality.

Course registration is open from September 2 to September 28, 2026. You have to be offically enrolled at the University of Graz to register.
