We will be offering a free Zoom lecture HOW TO BE A FILM DETECTIVE, a one-hour introduction to the world of ‘archival footage’ in a lively and engaging format.
The discussion will cover what is meant by the term archival footage (basically any footage shot from the 1890’s to yesterday), where to find it and the basic legal issues they should be aware of. The talk is designed to be interesting and interactive, with students getting a taste of how archival material is involved in almost every aspect of the entertainment industry; from video games to TV shows to feature-films. The talk, given during your class, is a spirited one hour zoom discussion focusing on the world of ‘archival material.’ It focuses on how students can find and use archival material in school as well as their future careers.
Points covered in the talk include:
- What is an ‘archival film’
- Learning the art of hunting for material
- What is legal and what isn't- a basic 101 in copyright law.
- 'Reading' a piece of footage. This includes decoding the footage to figure out its original time and place.
- What jobs in the entertainment industry require knowing about archival films?
