We are delighted to share with you that we’ve extended the deadline for our CALL FOR PAPERS for our 3rd edition of the Graz/Puerto Rico International Conference on Human Rights from an Inter-American Perspective:
CAMPS, BELONGING, AND ABOLITION DEMOCRACY
June 4-7, 2026 at University of Graz, Austria
Abstract Submission Deadline: January 19,2026
Our 2026 conference will feature several compelling keynote speakers, including Sami Al-Haj, Bertha Bermúdez Tapia, Diana Coleman, Mohamedou Ould Salahi Houbeini, and Rinaldo Walcott, among others. As in years past, it will juxtapose the work of academics, activists, poets, and the formerly incarcerated. Especially prominent among the latter are men who were imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay and narrated their experiences in memoir, film, visual art, and other creative work. Together we will explore the relevance of camps, detention centers, prisons, and similar spaces, focusing on their relevance to humanistic inquiry, cultural critique, and ongoing struggles for equality, democracy, respect for ethics, and the protection of human rights.
The conference invites researchers, academics, human rights lawyers, graduate students, as well as representatives of collectives, community organizers, and local leaders to contribute their voices. Please note that we also value plural knowledge, grassroots experiences, and alternative ways of producing knowledge about camps, incarceration, detention, deportation, and related topics. Co-authored proposals between researchers and individuals directly impacted by practices and policies related to the conference theme are encouraged.
English and Spanish will be the conference languages.
The detailed Call for Papers is attached. The deadline for abstracts and panel proposals is January 19,2026 to camps2026(at)uni-graz.at
We are looking forward to receiving your abstracts, to welcoming you in Graz, and to learning together.
All the best,
Nicole Haring, University of Graz
