International Women, Ageing and Media Research Summer School

June 17-19, 2014

The 2014 International Women, Ageing and Media (WAM) Research Summer School (at the University of Gloucestershire) will take place in Cheltenham (UK) from June 17-19, 2014 and will bring together international postgraduate researchers across disciplines whose research engages with women, ageing and issues of identity, representation, cultural activity, creativity, lived experience and popular cultural forms (e.g. popular music, film, television, literature, dance, fashion and digital social media). The Summer School will provide excellent opportunities for postgraduate researchers to make important connections with other researchers working in the field of Ageing Studies and in addition to presenting work there will be research training workshops exploring methods and conceptual issues relating to women and ageing studies. All participants will take part in a methods project during their attendance and publish a joint methods paper in the Postgraduate Journal of Women, Ageing and Media as an event outcome.

This year the Summer School includes a public symposium funded by the University of the West of England: Older Age and Cultural Activity that will take place on the afternoon of the 17th June. This will feature Dr Trish Winter (University of Sunderland, UK) who will present work from her AHRC funded project A Somatic Ethnography of Grand Gestures Elders Dance Group to a mixed audience of Summer School participants, research staff, service providers for older people, older people's user groups and anyone interested in the importance of cultural activity in later life. The content of the symposium will feed directly into the methods workshops during the following two days of Summer School.

Call for abstracts
Proposals for 20 minute presentations are invited from doctoral and early career researchers at any stage of their work and from any discipline whose topics are relevant to women, ageing and issues of identity, cultural activity, representation, creativity, lived experience and popular cultural forms (e.g. popular music, film, television, literature, dance, fashion and digital social media). Presentations may take the form of papers, posters, films and multimedia presentations. Please submit an abstract of 200 words by April 30, 2014 to wambookings(at)glos.ac.uk.

Your abstract details should include:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Institutional affiliation and year of study
  • Title of PhD/Research Project and disciplinary field
  • Up to five key words, which will help reviewers classify your panel
  • Technical requirements for presentation

We will confirm whether you have a place by May 6, 2014. The deadline for registration and payment is 31st May 2014. There is a fee of £55 (unwaged) and £65 (waged) which covers the symposium, dance event and Summer School participation. A full programme plus details for registration travel and accommodation will appear on the WAM webpage by the end of April, once places have been confirmed: http://insight.glos.ac.uk/researchmainpage/centres/wam/Pages/default.aspx.

If you have any queries please contact Dr Ros Jennings (Director of Women, Ageing and Media, University of Gloucestershire).
