January 2022 marked the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the Guantánamo Bay detention camps, which were used as a U.S. military prison just months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in 2001. Such anniversaries offer opportunities to pause, look back, and imagine the future anew, but what insights will this one foster?
To investigate and critically discuss this matter within an academic setting, the Center for Inter-American Studies holds a conference together with the Department of English at the University of Puerto Rico’s Río Piedras Campus. The conference titled “Camps, (In)justice, and Solidarity in the Americas: Commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the Guantánamo Bay Detention Camps” is held on May 23–29, 2022, in Graz, Austria.
