From October 13-15, the Center of Inter-American Studies (C.IAS) hosted the “Days of Honoring and Resistance” together with the Indigenous Rights Collective (INRICO).
Laida Mori opened the event series with her talk “The Shipibo-Konibo in the Amazon”. By focusing on the practice of healers, she illustrated how spirituality is engrained in the life and traditions of the Shipibo-Konibo people. Laida stressed the complexity of healer’s paths of becoming and their intense connection to nature.
Next, the Mapuche representatives Machi Patricia Huinca Blanco and Ariel Traipi Huilipan from Fundacion Chilca shared the history and ongoing resistance of the Mapuche in an online interview led by Piera Novion. The highlight was their presentation of a one-kilometer-long rainbow weaving (Tejido Relmu) crafted by the community’s women during the pandemic.
On Thursday, we learned from Hana Gouveia about the resistance of the Xukuru People, one of the few remaining Indigenous communities left in the East of Brazil, who continue fighting for the recognition and return of their ancestral land.
Lastly, Cesar Aguilar Alcedo closed with “The Multidimensionality of Knowledge in Pre-Hispanic Cultures of Peru”, displaying how Peruvian cultures use cosmology and other knowledge systems in contexts such as fashion and design.
Thanks to all presenters for their amazing talks!
